Remove the back cover and check if the compressor and the fan next to it are running.

If it's not, is it warm or cold on touch?

Does it make a clicking noise once every few minutes?

Post your findings.

Gene.

Hi Gene,
Back cover is off. Fan is running, compressor is hot to touch. No clicking sounds though. I also remember smelling an electrical stink in the kitchen last week that I could not trace. Could be related?

Sounds like the compressor is bad and has to be replaced.

It has to be done by a certified tech and will cost you $600 to $800.

It's hard to recommend which way to go: fix it or buy a new one.

Gene.

UGGH!! No chance that it's the capacitor or overload relay? The comp is $280 on the sears site....really that tough to install?? thanks, eric

Okay, I understand why I can't install the comp myself...

Well, I didn't want to take any chances. I called Sears about warranty. The fridge is 6 years old, so it was not covered. They offered me a 1 year extended warranty that would cover this problem as well. For $250.00 I went for it. Guy came next day, and it turned out to be the relay. He did say that this compressor is OK, but it is poorly made. I checked the comp part on Sears, and they have changed the unit with a different model. So, that's probably next!!
