Power surge damage to refrigerator

After a probable power surge, the fridge stopped cooling completely. The fans are running. The compressor hums, but I'm not sure it's actually running. The compressor gets warm, and after a few seconds there is a click from a 2 wire black box that I believe is the run capacitor. After unplugging the fridge, the box clicks again, presumably after it has cooled.
A similar posting suggested testing the compressor with a multimeter, 8 ohms pin to pin, infinity pin to ground. I'm going to try that, as I'll replace the appliance if the compressor's bad. Otherwise, I'm guessing the run capacitor or overload. How can I tell which to replace, or should I do both?
