Our Kenmore upright freezer had been working fine since we bought it new a few years ago. We are in it at least every few days. We keep it at zero degrees F based on a stand-alone thermometer sitting on the top shelf. We have not changed the setting as far back as I can recall.

A few days ago, we found the temp approaching 40 degrees  and items on the top shelf and in the door were somewhat thawed. Turning the dial off and back on started it running again and it was back to zero by the next morning. It seemed fine for a couple of days, but then we found it at -15 degrees and still running. We turned it off and reset the dial and it seemed fine for another day. Since then, we have to check it a couple of times a day. It seems to either not come on when it gets warm, or not shut off once it starts.

Is there a likely candidate for a part to replace?

Sounds Like a defrost problem. Easiest thing to check first is the defrost timer. AP2113785 It is usually located behind the grill. Look at the part first then you will know what you are looking for. Kick the defrost timer into defrost manually. Turn the raised Dial (grey knob) with something that is wideer than a standard screw driver. there is a "one way" raised portion that only lets you turn clock-wise. You will hear faint click, keep going until you hear a solid/loud click. That's defrost. If the freezer makes water/defrosts then that is the problem. The defrost cycle will last 20-40 minutes and then kick back on. After defrost is over and it did not make water, the next thing to check is the defrost heater AP2113778 for continuity then the defrost thermostat. More than likely its the thermostat. Both are located on the evaperator behind the back freezer wall.
