SxS unit inop. - compressor gets hot,not running, hums, sounds like thermal protection cutting in and out. I checked the run capacitor - its is shorted (2 ohms accross terminals with DMM). Is there anything else that I can do?

Check that the condenser/compressor fan is running

I checked the run capacitor - its is shorted (2 ohms accross terminals with DMM).
Does sound like it is bad but sometimes meters can give weird readings when checking a capacitor often depends on the meter's design. Try different resistance scales.

Check the compressor windings for resistance. Be sure to also check the windings to the compressor case (you may have to scrape off some paint if the compressor does not have a ground connection). A grounded winding means the compressor is toast.

You could try running the unit without the capacitor to see if it will start up. Unfortunately I could not find a wiring diagram so am not sure if this will work.

Remove the start relay and shake it, if it rattles it needs replacing.
