Default HOT orange glow
Model Number: TFX20JR/TFT20JR   Brand: GE   Age: 5 - 10 years

Appliance Parts from AppliancePartPros.com

It's a side by side unit. The problem is located on the freezer side.
Open door - - The very bottom shelf - - has an opening at the back, that goes upwards.
What ever is up inside there, could be in lock-up?
I happened to open the frezr door, and noticed an ORANGE LIGHT or A "GLOW" of Orange. It is a HOT glow. Very odd. Help is appreciated. Thanx

The glow is coming from the defrost heater. On your model can come on 2-3 times a day depending on the defrost timer.

Does the refrigerator seem to be working or are you having some kind of problems with it other than the glow?

Thank You Sir. It appears to work fine. BUT, the orange glow just seems out of the ordinary.
Up date, unplugged unit at 9pm fri . . went to work at 11pm fri nite . . . just got home at 8:30 sat morning and plugged unit back in to power up . . . unit completly empty and removed the inside back panel on the frezr side . . . found at he very top section what looks like a condensor(?) . . then there is a round element maybe 6-8" long . . that is followed by a smaller (?) condensor(?) . . then again a round element and this is the orange glow concerned part.

The orange glow is completely normal and what you describe is normal. Both of those heaters that you see come on 2-3 times a day for 15-30 minutes to melt all the ice that has accumulated on the coils you see. This is how the refrigerator is frost-free and if this doesnít happen the ice will build up to the point that it blocks all airflow. The refrigerator canít keep things cold with out airflow plus the ice acts as an insulator when it gets thick causing the temperature to rise first in the fresh food section then in the freezer.

I hope this answers your question and donít worry about the glow.

Thanx again. The unit was unplugged and power-less for almost 12 hours. The way I saw it, there was no reason for that heater to kick on.
In the end, for $61.00 which is the cost of new part. . . I have piece of mind knowing the part in question is no longer in service.

NO NO NO if you left it unpluged for twelve hours, and it was not cold in the freezer and the heater came on when you plugged it up, then you have a problem that could be dangerous!!!! also a new heater will not stop this from happening, as it is being "told" to come on..By all means have a technician come an check it out! that is where your peace of mind will come from. For whatever reason it is bypasing the defrost thermostat, which is a safety cut-off, AND staying in the defrost mode. Does this glow occurr when the compressor is running? if so yo have a mojor safety issue.

If you saw the glow on and unplugged the unit for 12 hours and then plugged back in and the heater was still on then no that is not normal and like he said if you see that glow when the compressor is on it is not normal.

If the glow is coming on when the compressor is on most likely the defrost timer is bad.

If the glow is on and the temperature at the coils is over 60 degrees the defrost thermostat is bad (which you changed with the heater).

However if you just look into the freezer and see the glow, the compressor is off, and everything seems to be cold/frozen it is normal.
