Default freezer is cold but refrigerator is not
Model Number: 253.6580250A   Brand: Kenmore   Age: 5 - 10 years

Appliance Parts from AppliancePartPros.com

Hi, I have read the sticky note and think that I can follow the steps to get a more accurate diagnostic of my problem, though I think I should check to see if it is worth fixing in any scenario. My top freezer Kenmore is about 10 years old, and last week it started to have the problem where the apparatus (I think it is called the evaporator?) behind the panel in the freezer froze up, and therefore the freezer was cold but the fridge part was not. I let it defrost and it was ok again, but the same thing would happen in about two days. I have attached a picture of what i see when I opened up the back panel in the freezer.

I understand the Kenmore has lived to its life expectancy and it is probably time to get a new one. I am hoping to get your opinions on whether I should investigate further or it is not worth it to bother at all. Many thanks and have a blessed day to all!

Your refrigerator probably has a defrost problem.

There are three main parts in a defrost system.

The defrost timer
Frigidaire 215846602 Defrost Timer - AppliancePartsPros.com

The defrost thermostat.
Frigidaire 5303918202 Defrost Thermostat - AppliancePartsPros.com

And the defrost element.
Frigidaire 240356221 Heater-Defrost - AppliancePartsPros.com

The timer is like a clock with switches, it sends power to the compressor for X number of hours. Then it goes into a defrost part of the cycle for about 30 minutes. After the frost is melted and the time is up, the timer transfers power back to the compressor. If somehow the coil area should get too warm the defrost thermostat will shut down the defrost until the timer runs out.

This refrigerate/defrost cycle repeats all day and every day as long as the refrigerator is powered up.

One of these parts or the wiring in between has failed in yours.

Many thanks! So where do I go from here? Just follow the instruction in the sticky note to see which part it is? The part seems cheap enough-Should I attempt to replace the part myself?

One way or the other, it is not a problem with the sealed system is it (I heard that sealed system problem also produces frost similar to that).

Is that all the frost that collects? Is it only frosting about half the coils?

If that is all it ever frosts, its probably low on freon.

Usually the coils should have a pretty uniform frost pattern all the way across and from the top to bottom.

sorry if this message appears twice. yes that is the pattern i see every time I open up the back panel

freon is a separate issue from the defrosting system right? Where should I start in diagnosing the problem? I mean I know there is probably no easy way to find out but I just want to know where to start. Many thanks!

The compressor and coils are referred to as the "sealed system".

If you have a leak, that means its going to need freon to work correctly. But even if you add freon, it will just leak out again. Unless you can find the leak and seal it. That kind of thing can get costly.

To just check the freon pressure, you would need to put a tap/access valve on a low side line and you would need a gauge set for the type of freon your refrigerator has.
