I came home tonight to find the freezer defrosting and the fridge side too warm.

It has power. The lights come on. I don't hear anything running. I've had to repair this thing so many times, but the new symptom this time is: the electronic temp adjust to set each side to cold-coldest (1-7) just has - where the numbers should be, and it doesn't respond to the up and down buttons.

Any pointers on what to test first, with that symptom in mind?
