The compressor comes on and runs for a little while then goes off. Any ideas?

First check if the condenser/compressor fan is also going off when the compressor shuts off.

If it stays on then it is probably the compressor overheating.

Unplug the unit and check the compressor windings for continuity and grounding.
The below link may be helpful.

This can diagnose a bad compressor.
It does not tell you that the compressor is good as it may have other internal problems.

If the windings are OK check the start device and capacitor.
Often the onnly reluiable way to check these is to instrall a new one.
