Model Number: 596.61852101 Brand: Kenmore Age: 5 - 10 years
The unit has a freezer on the bottom and refrigerator at the top.
It does not have an ice maker or water dispenser. The unit fails to cool. With the unit completely defrosted and clean I plug it in. The units fan (lower right of unit's back side) starts and so does what sounds like the compressor. After a few minutes, a noise a bit louder than the fan starts up for a few seconds and stops. This noise does not sound normal. Can you tell me what is wrong or what to check? Thanks, Dave Inman |

Hi Dave,
Remove the back cover and while the fan is running, touch the compressor to see if it's running too. If the compressor is "on" for at least 24 hours but there is no proper temperature inside - most likely the system is low on Freon and you have to call a certified tech to fix it. If the compressor is "off" and clicks every few minutes - it could be a bad start device or a bad compressor. The start device you can replace yourself - it's pretty simple, but if there is a problem with the compressor, you have to call a certified tech to replace it and it's very expensive. - The part number for the start device is AP174896 Gene.

I have a Kenmore bottom-freezer refrigerator. Model #: 596.75522400.
Recently replaced compressor and the Control Board Kit (Jazz) -- part #12002339. Freezer keeping ice frozen. Refrigerator warm. Control board troubleshooting Service Test #1 indicates that "Defrost Thermostat Shorted (closed)." Now what? Do I need a new control board? Is the Control Board controlling all of these systems? Or is there a separate Defrost Thermostat that can be replaced? Thanks for your help. |

Hi Marney,
You do not need a new control board because the defrost thermostat is a separate part which is attached to the evaporator coils (behind the rear panel in the freezer). - The part number for the defrost thermostat is AP3495421 Gene.
