I have a side by side Kitchen Aid ksrb25frbx01 is the model number

The freezer is freezing at about -4 degrees F. The refrigerator is anywhere from 45 to about 65 according on where I point the thermometer gun. I have it on the coldest it can be. It doesn't seem to be cooling on the refrigerator side.

I am mechanically inclined---but not knowledgeable on how refrigerators work except to plug them in :). If someone could help me figure out if this is something worth having a repair guy come out to look at, or would be more expensive in the long run.

Here are your parts

See the attachment for the tech sheet.

The freezer is actually a little too cold, it should be between 0 and 5 degrees F.
This should not cause your problem but is where it should be set once you get the unit fixed.

Check to be sure that the fresh food compartment light shuts off when the door is closed.

Cold air is input to the fresh food side through the damper/diffuser (item 15 in section 02). See if any cold air is getting in. You may have to hold the fresh food door switch closed to be able to do this. The freezer door should be closed.

Try running the diagnostics in the tech sheet.

Note that there is a vent between the two sides lower down on the separating wall, make sure it is clear of items in both compartments. I doubt this is your problem as the temperature is too high for it to be just a low air flow problem but it is worth a check.
