It will cool for ~ day and then stop. If it "slap" the front control panel it will begin cooling again. for ~day and then stop again

I changed the defrost timer and that did not fix the problem

Is the thermostat the next thing or is there something else

The most probable cause is the thermostat.
It is not uncommon for them to stick open.
