My refrigerator (Kenmore 785.78719.803) compressor motor will sometimes not start. The motor will hum for a few seconds then stop. After a while it will start. Sometimes the freezer will exhibit frost and soft items.
I believe the starter relay is at fault. It could be the compressor. But I would like to replace the starter relay on the chance that the compressor is OK. The compressor is always very hot.
However, according to several internet parts providers these parts are no longer available for the starter relay for this unit.
Is there a universal starter kit that would work with the compressor?
The cat. # for the part is EBB44305402 and is described as a thermistor assmbly.

A start device will fail open, but very rarely fail by reducing the start current.
You probably have a hard starting compressor with burnt start winding.
You can try a universal start device on this, but you will need to take ohms readings with an ohmmeter.

Thanks for the reply.

Today I got a replacement that is very close to original. Whirlpool W10613606.
The parts store was able cross it over somehow. The wire connections were not the same but easy to adapt.
Fridge seems to be running fine.
We shall see how long it lasts.
