The defrost cycle stays on so long that it thaws out the food in the freezer, and melts the ice in the ice maker and water comes out the dispenser. I bought a new board to repair this issue, but I do not think it is the motherboard. Is the issue the Defrost Limiter Thermostat? Or one, or both of Temperature Sensors?

Try replacing the evaporator thermistor clipped to the top of the evaporator.

I'm not understanding that. It is a Defrost Limiter Thermostat. The problem I'm having is with the amount of time, or limit the defroster stays on. Why would it not be the defrost limiter? One more thing is, at GE, the original parts for this refrigerator which have been discontinued had the 2 thermistors in the freezer as 2 separate part numbers, now the thermistors have been substituted for the same part-refrigerator temperature sensor.

Thank you very much.
I have one more question maybe you, or anyone could answer. With the new board it says to cut the 2nd pin on the J1 connector and I'm hesitant to do so because I have read that some people cut the wire thinking they had to, only to have to turn around and reconnect it.
Refrigerator s/n is VDS218940. According to the installation procedure I'm supposed to cut the wire. How do I know if this model is an Encoder Model? It has manual dial controls for the fridge and freezer, but push button circuits for the water and ice. Knowing my luck, I will cut it and I will be wrong. What's making me hesitant is first of all, its not cut already. Second, my connector has wires in pin #'s 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 9. On the procedure it says: Note that wires 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 are connected with 6, 7, 8 empty and a wire in 9. What is the wire in pin #6? If I knew that, it may clear up my confusion.
I probably won't even have to change the board, but I'm either going to anyway, or keep it so I have one if in the future I need to change it.

I don't think it matters if it has an encoder or not. If you want, just don't cut the wire and monitor the fridg. temperature.
