Hello all,

I have a GE fridge with a bottom freezer drawer that's about 6 years old (I'm sorry, I don't have a model number handy). A week ago I had some concerns about it and I had a repairman look at it and found nothing wrong.

I don't really know a lot about refrigeration so I have some general questions.

1.) How long is a typical defrost cycle? I've seen it range from 25-35 minutes, which from Googling seems OK but I don't understand why it would vary. Is it timer controlled and if so, shouldn't the time be the same?

2.) How does it know when to go into defrost mode and when to leave it?

3.) How long should it typically run for?

4.) If I don't hear anything from the fridge, is that assumed to be defrost mode or is there some other mode it might be in?

5.) When running, the freezer fan seems always on and the fridge fan turns on and off. Is this normal and what triggers the fans on and off?

Thank you for bearing with my simple questions. I've tried Google but got some conflicting answers so I wanted to just ask directly.

There are many types of defrost systems depending on the model.

I am going to assume your unit is electronically controlled and the following should answer your questions.
You will have to join the site and be logged in to be able to download the manual.

Thanks for the link. So from reading it, it essentially does what it wants and there's no point in timing it? :)

The past few days it seems to be defrosting a little more and running less, but it has been a tad cooler. The food inside seems fine for now.

Oh, and the part number is GDS20KCSAWW and I believe it is an auto defrosting model. Not sure if that provides any more details or would be different from the link above.

Here are your parts

Yes it will be basically the same.
The dfrost is controled from the control board (Item 801 in section 02).

A couple things you may want to check are.

Are the condenser/compressor coils under the unit clean?
Does the condenser/compressor fan run?
Are the door gaskets sealing OK?
