last night noticed freezer was not cold, food was defrosting,
try to manual move the defrost timer and heard something come on, not sure if compressor was on, this morning no luck , things were defrosting inside, also noticed compressor seems hot, looked all around and web pages point to thermostat and defrost timer? what about compressor feeling hot, is this something wrong

Not sure about the above.
You need to be sure about what came on.
I am assuming that both the evaporator and the compressor were off when you noticed the problem.
They are wired in parallel so when one is on the other should be on.
Could be that you were just in a defrost cycle but also have another problem.
Currently:
Is the evaporator/freezer fan on?
Is the compressor on? You should be able to hear it but also should be able to feel it vibrating?
If both are on remove the rear cover in the freezer so you can inspect the evaporator coils.
Are they heavily iced/frosted over?
Is the frost pattern even?
If there is just frost in one area (usually where the freon enters the coils) it may be a sealed system problem.

This unit does not have a condenser/compressor fan so if it is on all the time it will get hot.
