4 months ago the coil froze solid on this unit. I opened the back of the freezer compartment and checked resistance on the defrost heater and it checked out OK, so I replaced the defrost switch. The unit ran fine until yesterday, it froze up again. I rechecked the heater and switch and they both appear to be fine. Is there something else on this unit that controls the defrost heater?? (eg defrost timer, control board):(

Here are your parts
Parts for Whirlpool GB2FHDXWS03 Refrigerator - AppliancePartsPros.com

See the attachment for your tech sheet.

Yes the control board (item 5 in section 04) runs the defrost cycles.

You could unplug the unit and measure from J1-pin 1 (L2 N) to J1-pin 5 (STAT).
If you measure the defrost heater resistance then you know the heater and defrost thermostat are OK so it must be a board problem.

Just wondering how to check these? I already ordered a control board to try out as I didn't see anywhere in the diagrams/part lists either of these two parts. Thanks in advance....

The defrost heater is item 10 in section 06.
The defrost thermostat is not shown.
See the below.
The defrost thermostat should be 0 ohms when frozen.
The defrosts heater should be about 30 ohms,

Denman I have been looking at this post and hope you can help me out. I have the same issues and stupidly ordered a circuit board after reading another post about a S in service mode meant a bad board. I see now I should have tested the heater circuit and thermostat circuit. I am trying to figure out if I can test these individually or is this best replaced as a group? thanks for the help..

If the heater is bad then I would replace both.

If the heater is OK then I would just replace the defrost thermostat.

Also if the thermostat measures OK but is deformed/bulged, replace it.

So I tested it last night and got 30ohms of resistance testing at pins 1 and 5 I saw thats good for the heater so thats probably ok? Should it also have resistance for the thermostat? And since Im getting the S on the panel when tested then most likely the thermostat is shoeted?

Yes it looks OK

Should it also have resistance for the thermostat?
The thermostat should be 0 ohms when frozen and 56 Kohms (56,000) when thawed.

Depends if it is frozen or thawed.
