The evaporator coil in our side by side keeps freezing up, and its not defrosting. I was told the defroster might be bad. How do I know if its the heater or could it be the thermostat?

Thanks,

Brian

Remove the freezer panel and remove the defrost thermostat, a round item clipped to the evaporator. Temporarily short the wires. Remove the front kick panel under the door and turn the defrost timer shaft on the left side, till the compressor stopps running.
If the unit starts defrosting, you have a bad defrost thermostat AP4374171.
If not, you probably have a bad defrost heater, AP2114071 They usually don't fail but it's possible.
