The I/M has a separate optical sensor on the side wall instead of a shut off bar. I've checked the light status (2 flashes etc) and the optical part seems to work. I've puled out the I/M itself and have no AC voltage (actually measures approx. 30 vac with my voltmeter) at the female connector to the I/M. What would be the next step?
