I went out on this call three weeks ago, and found the freezer not defrosting. The heater was open. I replaced it with a dual element heater, I also replaced the terminator. Thought everything was fine until last week . We got a call back same problem. I talked to our local supply and decided to change out the mother board, This morning customer calls back with same problems. My question is, should the terminator ohm out closed at room temp. The limit shows 30 to 140 Part # WR50x10068.
Thanks Mitch

That thermostat is closed until it reaches 140 degrees. Under normal operation this thermostat will never open. This thermostat doesn’t give a lot of trouble I wouldn’t change it unless it is open. The thermistor and the main board controls the defrost heater. You may want to change the top themistor. Since the heater was open go back and double check the connection on the heater. We did ohm out the top thermistor. It was 2.3 at ambient temp. Is this within range?

The best way to check the accuracy of these thermistors is to check it in a cup of ice water. This will make the thermistor about 32 degrees and it should be 16.6K ohms at that temperature . For more on this visit. http://www.appliance-repair-it.com/GE-refrigerator-repair.html Also make sure the door gasket and the flap in the ice shoot is closing properly.

You can go to my section in the "sticky" above, "(GSS and PSS) models. There you will find the section where you can check all the thermisters at the motherboard and place a jumper on the power connector to manually check defrost.

Locate the 3 pin power connector on the bottom of the motherboard Pull off the connector and place a wire jumper between the mating pins as labeled on the motherboard, line and def. Plug in fridg, it should now defrost.
