You have a cal-rod heater that rarely fails. Reach in the bottom of the fridg control panel and stick a flat bladed screwdriver in the hole and turn the defrost timer till the compressor stops. If no defrost, you probably have a bad defrost terminator, a round thing clipped to the evaporator coil.
If you get defrost, replace the defrost timer.

Thanks for your assistance. Is a visual observation of the condenser the only way to assess if the defrost heater is working. Would you have part numbers for the two parts suggested.

The defrost timer part # AP4071015, the defrost thermostat comes with the heater attached, AP4069915 for $33. You can opt for the thermostat separately, WR50X55, a universal replacement for $4.
If you suspect the thermostat is bad, just remove it, short the wires together temporarily, and see if the heater now works.

Thank you very much again.Should the heater get warm to touch or will the frost just start to melt?Frost started to disappear when i turned the timer slot as you suggested just not sure if the melting was due to the heater or the fact the compressor stopped. The heater didn't feel any warmer to touch. Thanks again.

Its nearly always the heater assy, not a rarity at all , and always change the complete defrost heater, dont muck around just replacing the thermostat!!Good night and good luck.
