My Amana refer/bottom freezer model ABL2522FES has stopped cooling. I have had a problem with the auto defrost a couple times over the past few years and have just turned it off and manually defrosted it and it takes care of the problem. This time both freezer and refrigerator have stopped cooling completely but there is no ice buildup. After cleaning the coils (didn't help) I replaced the control board but this didn't solve the problem either. Condenser and fan seem to be working. Could it be the freezer thermostat? Any suggestions???

Here are your parts Parts for Amana ABL2522FES - AppliancePartsPros.comSee the attachment for the tech sheet. Note that I could only find the following in this series so it is for an ABL2522FES12. Double check that the compressor is running. You can usually hear it but you should also be able to feel it vibrating and it should be warm. If it is on then you have a sealed system problem and this will be an expensive repair. You need a pro. Check the unit's warranty often the sealed system has a longer warranty. |

The compressor is running. Do you think it could be the defrost heater and/or defrost thermostat?
If it is a sealed system problem as you mentioned, what do you consider expensive?

If it was a defrost system you would get some cooling, just not enough.
This is because the evaporator coils are frosted/iced over to the point that the evaporator/freezer fan cannot pull air through them so it does not cool properly.
But you still have the iced up evaporator giving some cooling to the freezer.
Expensive is $500.00 and up.
It could be a freon lean. There is no use re-charging it till the leak is found and fixed. Also there is no guarantee that the leak can be found.
Also it may need a new compressor. |

My problem is that the Freezer is REALLY freezing things, even when it's set to the warmest setting (our ice cream is brittle!) I haven't noticed any problems with the Fridge compartment. Our kitchen is kept in the mid-50's generally, so I'm not sure if that contributes to the problem.

This should not cause any problems.
Check the freezer thermistor resistance. |

I finally found this address again, so I'm writing to thank you for your advice. What I did was completely turn off and warm up the fridge. Washed everything (now that's a change!) I put a fan in the freezer to blow warm air over the coils. Guess What? A "huge" pool of water collected by the morning. Mopped that all up and turned the fridge back on. Everything works fine. The ice cream is no longer brittle (actually, it was soon only a passing memory!)
So, while I didn't have to use the tech manual, I still thank you for sending it. If I need it next time I have it!
