We have newly acquired a gently used Amana side by side fridge/freezer with ice/water in the door, a model #SX23D. The back story is that the previous owner removed it from the house and stored it in a barn over winter without winterizing (draining) it. We don't know why he removed it, maybe it didn't work right then either. A friend of ours got hold of it, cleaned it with his pressure washer (and who knows how much water got up underneath), let it dry a couple days before plugging it in, then discovered that the ice-in-the-door feature didn't work (leaked like a sieve) We assume it froze in the barn and some pipes were burst, we saw the filter, it was split apart and looked like it got frozen. So the friend gave the fridge to us.

After wrestling it into the house we have discovered that the freezer won't get cold enough to actually freeze stuff, though turned down all the way. We put a cheap thermometer in the freezer and even on the coldest setting it only gets down to about 20 F (the book says it should be around 0 F), the fridge side seems to get as cold as we want it to, currently around 40 F.

Ice cubes take a long time to freeze and the ice cream is like soup. At this point we just want it to freeze the groceries, we'll deal the ice-in-the-door problem later. According to the thermometer it's a little colder at the very top and very bottom of the unit but only by a few degrees.

We removed the ice maker bin inside the freezer to make more room and made sure the flap in the door to the ice dispenser is closed and checked that the vents are clear. We can't find any air leaks anywhere. The machine ran for nearly 2 days straight after plugging it in without turning off but now cycles on and off. We can hear 2 motors running, one we think is the fan, the other we think is the compressor. These seem to cycle as well, sometimes both on at the same time.

The metal on the bottom edges of the front of the unit around the doors is warm and the center divider is hot as hell all the way to the top. We looked underneath and vacuumed for good measure though it looked pretty clean, no giant dust bunnies or creatures from outer-space.

We still need to level the beast but we need to find a level first, but it's not too bad and the doors are sealing okay. What else can we try? Thanks for any ideas!
