I have a Kenmore upright freezer, model number 253.21421105.

It is in a semi-finished basement, used regularly, and is kept clean.

In the past few days it has stopped cooling and the food has started to thaw. The fan works fine (air is flowing out of the vents in the back top). The compressor is very warm, and seems to be working. However, the sides of the freezer, in which the coils sit, used to get cool, but they no longer do.

Any hints? Or is it time to just go buy a new one.

If the compressor is not vibrating, it is not running. If you remove the compressor start device and it rattles, it's bad, order a new one on this site 216649313

Thanks so much for getting back to me. Here's what is happening this morning: All appears to be running -- lights on, fan on, compressor vibrating and warm. But there is no cooling.

The sealed system leaked refigerant and damaged the compressor, gauges would confirm. Time for a new one.

Thanks, Richappy. By "a new one", do you mean a new freezer or a new compressor? Also, is there a way to confirm this? You note "gauges would confirm". Is that something I might be able to do, or would it require a service visit?

If the condensing coils are not warm, the compressor is not doing anything, either failed internally, or out of refrigerant. Just too costly to fix, best get a new one. Compressor replacement generally $600.
