Hi folks..Thanks in advance for your help!
I'm seeing heavy frost on bottom of freezer bin, very little cool in frig section.. appears no defrost cycle happening
from the research I've done , it appears that this unit has an adaptive defrost system with no mechanical timer. I'm just confirming whether I'm on the right track
And trying to determine where to start troubleshooting. I own and am very familiar with Fluke 77, and aren't afraid
i'm thinking 1- defrost freezer, pull coil cover off of back of freezer compartment 2 check bi metal can and heater for continuity
question is.. How can i put the box into defrost mode to check the board?
does that sound like the right steps to take?
thanks very much... waltinbatonrouge

Here are your parts Parts for Whirlpool GD5RHAXNB01 Refrigerator - AppliancePartsPros.comSee the attachment for the tech sheet. It has the procedure to force a defrost First remove the evaporator cover in the freezer so you can see the coils. Do not let them de-ice. If yes. Manually force a defrost cycle, See the tech sheet. When the fans and compressor turn off you are in defrost. Now check the defrost heater to see if it is on. Be careful you do not want to burn your fingers. If the heater is on then the board needs replacing. If not on. Unplug the unit. Remove the wire for one side of the heating element from the wiring and measure it for continuity, usually around 20 ohms or so. If the heater is OK Remove one wire to the defrost thermostat and measure it, should be 0 ohms when frozen. Note that it opens just above freezing so must be frozen to check it. Also inspect it, if it is bulged at all replace it even if it measures OK. If both the above are OK then odds are the defrost board is toast. Best way to test this is a live test to see if you have 120 volts across the heater/defrost thermostat combo. |

I'll get back to you in the am with the actual fault.....
take care. waltinbatorouge Hi I wanted to take a minute to give you an update! i forced a defrost..no heat , but the element checked fine with resistance read....so I pulled the board and looked at the solder jopints on the back of one of the relays..It overheated to the point that it melted the solder...so I ordered a remanufactured board from corecentric as well as a replacement bi metal sensor...meanwhile i resoldered the conatcts and checked the board for other cold solder joints...I reinstalled it and forced a defrost...relay clicked and it heated up.....so, i by passed the bi metal sensor until the replacement parts arrived..the frig worked fine for 30 days until I got back over there... tonight I replaced the sensor and board..ran it through the diagostics and the defrost element warms up fine...so all seems well...... thanks again for your great asistance and especially the diagram....it made the difference.....and my offer still stands..if you need help with a stihl chainsaw or yamaha grizzly ATV ...lemme know... take care waltinbatonrouge
