the unit started thawing out, we removed food and moved food to smaller apt size fridge on hand, ordered new overload/relay -w- start capacitor. installed, unit still was making a buzzing sound from the area of compressor/replaced relay. turned off, wife turned back on after an hour or so and it worked fine, thought we had it, but then it started thawing again. now when it does it I turn the on-off knob on and off several times until the unit doesn't respond, then I leave it off for 15-20 minutes and then turn back on and the unit works fine. I believe by turning it off and on several times that somehow I am resetting something in the unit then it works fine. could this be the jazz board, or the defrost time,, what is making it do this. any information would be greatly appreciated.

You either have a hard starting compressor, or a burnt wire someplace. If you get lower voltage at the compressor when it tries to start, that would confirm a burnt wire. Most of the time though, it is a hard starting compressor usually due to a burnt start winding, or excessive internal compressor friction.

Hey thanks. So does this mean I should have tell the wife to go get a new one ? I got a repair man here who said it would take 3 hrs to replace compressor @ 105.00 hourly + the cost of a new compressor (_______)?

Get a new refrigerator, the repair estimate is a bit low, Most people will not sink a lot of money in an older fridg. I recomend either GE or Whirlpool new refrigerators.
