Question Electrical Diagram to test compressor on GE
Model Number: DSS25PFMDWW   Brand: GE   Age: 5 - 10 years

Appliance Parts from AppliancePartPros.com

Everything seems to work except compressor will not come on. there is a burned spot near bottom on back side of the motherboard. Before i order a new board, I would like to test the compressor to see if it will come on but cannot find a wiring schematic anywhere on the fridge and having trouble finding one online. I'm trying to determine if i can just apply 120 VAC to which pins on the compressor to see if it will come on and run before ordering the board. It was working fine till it quit. Compressor does not indicate a short from any of the 3 pins. This is a 9 year old unit and never had any trouble with it before. Thanks!!

Never apply 115 volts to the compressor, may burn it out. You have bad solder joints on the back of the motherboard AP4436216. They have caused your compressor to stop running. You can re-solder them, or order a new board.

Thanks Rich for that valuable info. May have saved me a compressor. I'm going to try to clean and re-solder the burned connection - nothing to lose at this point.
I'll post up the results of that when i get it done.

Thumbs up

To richappy: Well, so far so good. The pin on the motherboard that had let go of it's solder was a relay that was labeled 'compressor' which fits with the compressor not coming on. I took some 91% IPA and carefully scrubbed & rinsed to get the conformal coating all gone off the back of the board in that area. The soldering was kind of tricky but I managed to get it done. Lucky for me this particular ribbon was a big fat one made to carry some current and had some space around it.

Put it all back on and plugged it in and i was real happy when that compressor started humming.
Cooled down from 75 to 30 in the fridge side in about 4 or 5 hrs and so far it's been running about 9 hrs with no issues.

I had scheduled a service call for Monday before I found this forum, but will call to cancel that if it stays alive through the weekend.

The really good news is that thanks to your advice I can now be fairly comfortable just ordering a new board if this one fails again since i now know the compressor runs which was my original question in the first place.

I suspect something caused that relay to get hot enough to melt the solder off the pin so will not be surprised if it happens again.

richappy, thanks again for pointing me in the right direction while keeping my compressor alive in the process!!...Jon

When they wave soldered the board in production, the time duration, or temperature was too low, thus the solder at the higher thermal mass items was too thin and blew open on a power overload. If you did a good job re-soldering, this will not happen again, but it is a good idea to use a 1000 joule Belkin surge protector in the wall outlet available at Amazon.
