Model Number: GS21HTZBC1 Brand: Frigidaire Age: 5 - 10 years
Hi,
We just moved a Frigidaire GS21HTZBC1 fridge to a new apartment and now it won't cool. It was kept upright the whole time and wasn't banged around excessively. It was let sit for about two days before plugging it back in. The Fridge gets power, lights in both compartments turn on. The condenser fan runs and the compressor seems to run. The compressor vibrates slightly and makes a hum, it seems to run continuously without any clicking noises/shutoffs. After about an hour running its just barely warm to the touch. The cold control turned all the way to 0 will turn off the condenser fan and the compressor, turning the cold control above 0 will turn the fan and compressor back on. We have let it run for about 2 hours but its still blowing room temperature air into the freezer. Any ideas on how to fix this? Ads By Google Related Models |

Since the compressor is running and there is no cooling at all it sounds like you have a sealed system problem.
Could be that a leak developed while moving it and you are out of freon. This will be an expensive repair as you need a pro. Often it makes more sense to put those dollars towards a new unit.

Is there a way to check if the freon is gone?
You need a pro to do this. They have to hook up a set of gauges to the sealed system. The condenser coils never heat up. Maybe there is clog in a line somewhere? Could be a clog but again it takes a pro to check this out. If the compressor runs on a unit and it does not cool then there is no easy/inexpensive fix.

We are the second owners of this unit, so I'm not too sure about its history.
I went to look at the back and it looks like someone already soldered a service port to the compressor. Does this mean the unit had a leak in the sealed system and needed freon recharging in the past? Can I check the pressure from this port to see if the problem is low freon? There also seems to be spliced wire connections to the capacitor box, is that normal or does that indicate it was replaced? One of the ground wires also seems disconnected, would that cause any issues? I'm far from a pro but I'm really hoping to get this fridge working again if possible. This is the best pic I could get from my phone: ![]() |
