Side by Side quit cooling. Cleaned evap, evap fan runs okay. Compressor kicks on and heats up. Freezer control temp switch operates, compressor reacts when turned off and on. Fresh food control temp switch operates, opens and closes flap from freezer compartment.

Freezer compartment fan operates but no cooling.

This thing worked for years, suddenly quit cooling. Unplugged for 2-3 days to clean up mess inside, cleaned evap (not dirty at all) and worked for a week, now really dead.

I think you may be confusing the evaporator/freezer coils with the condenser/compressor coils. The evaporator coils are the ones in the freezer section.

Remove the cover inside the freezer compartment so you can inspect the coils.
If there is no frost or just frost in one area (usually where the freon enters the coils) then you have a sealed system problem and it will be an expensive repair. Often it makes more sense to put those dollars towards a new unit.

Be sure that the compressor has run for a couple hours before doing the above. If you do it shortly after a defrost cycle you may get the wrong diagnosis.

I replaced the starter and capacitor for the compressor to solve the problem. When I removed the old starter from the compressor, shook it and it rattled - so it was blown.
