my Kitchenaid side by side fridge/freezer makes soem pretty loud noise when the compressor kicks on. It seems to be getting worse over time but even when brand new i thought it was fairly loud or louder then i thought it should be. the funny thing is when i pull it out of the hole (it sets wedged in-between cabinets and counter-tops) the noise stops completely. had somebody try to tell me that newer fridges cant be touching anything or they vibrate like crazy (my opening is tight and the fridge does touch. the fan seems fairly clean. anybody know of any tricks or things to check for ??

I would pull the fridg out, remove the back panel. You might find tubing rattling.
