A few days ago the compressor quit working on my refrigerator. It gave me a click, then a buzz, then it would stop. The condenser fan would run until the buzzing quit. I went to forums and they said to clean the coils, which I did. I took the back panel off and found that the compressor was extremely hot, so I unplugged the refrigerator for about 4 hours.
When the compressor cooled down, I plugged it back in, and it worked fine. I pulled it away from the wall and ran a box fan behind it on high, but after about 10 hours it stopped working again. I unplugged it for a few hours, running the fan on it on high, and it began to work again.
Based on this, what are the odds that my compressor is bad? Did it overheat again because I didn't have the back panel attached, and the cleaning probably fixed the problem? We bought our house last year, so I don't really know how old the fridge is, and I don't want to live in constant terror that all of my food is going to spoil.

You may have a refrigerant leak/bad compressor. Measure the stabilized freezer and fridg temperatures and post.

It happened again last night; I unplugged the fridge for a couple of hours, running the box fan on the compressor, and it started up. Same thing this morning.
I will measure the temp later today, but I can estimate from the temp of food in both the fridge and freezer, the stabilized temp is the same as it was before this started to happen.

Sorry, sounds like you have a bad compressor. Kind of a typical problem with this unit.

I re-vacuumed all of the coils, let it run over the weekend, and it must have quit working sometime around Saturday, given the temp of the little food we left in there.
Is the compressor easy to install?

no, you'll need a pro to do it. And it's pretty expensive.
