It's a really old gal and while my daughter was trying to help chip away built up frost, she (was using a flat head btw  ) she punctured a shelf and it started hissing... What the heck did she do? What should I do? I'd ask the husband but he's out on a long haul and out of cell range for the next day or two.
Thank you so very much for any help you can give!!

Was the freezer unpluged as soon as this happened?

A student punctured her freezer coil and said she shut it off, but apparently not soon enough as when I put a fitting on the compressor tubing, WATER ran out! NOT good. In your case, it probably did the same thing, sorry, total junk. If the puncture was in a spot where water did not get sucked in, it might be fixable, but at a reduced compressor efficiency, probably not worth the effort.
