I am new to this forum and I am having a problem with my freezer/refrig shutting down as if it is defrosting.I play with the temp control and it may or may not come back on. I opened the back and noticed the compressor was hot but no fan. I tried an add on starter but it didn't make a difference. It is running now but what gives? It seems to be a controller problem but there is also a clear box in the cover which I believe I replaced once.(dont know what it does) Sorry for such a long post but this has me stumped because it doesn't happen all the time. Thanks

Here are your parts Replacement parts for Whirlpool ET8CHMXKT03 REFRIGERATOR | AppliancePartsPros.comSee the attachment for the tech sheet I play with the temp control and it may or may not come back on. This sounds like a thermostat (item 13 in Section 4) problem. It is not uncommon for them to fail this way re: they stick open intermittently. I opened the back and noticed the compressor was hot but no fan. I tried an add on starter but it didn't make a difference. It is running now but what gives? It does not really matter if it was hot. What matters is was it running. Could you hear it and did you feel it to see if it was vibrating? The fan is wired in parallel with the compressor so will only be on when th compressor is on. It seems to be a controller problem but there is also a clear box in the cover which I believe I replaced once.(dont know what it does) Could it have been the defrost thermostat (Item 4 in Section 4). Click on it's picture for more views and info. Sorry for such a long post but this has me stumped because it doesn't happen all the time. Thanks |

It seems that it still has a problem from time to time. I will change the thermostat also and let you know .It could be a combo of both.It just defrosted again today enough to melt my popcicles:( but started up cooling again.

After changing the thermostat controller it is running OK. I think it was doing exactly as you thought and not working ionce in a while. I also think the defroster timer helped somewhat. Time will tell!! Thanks for all your help.
