Amana fridge/freezer BG21V1W. The in-law said the freezer stopped freezing but fridge worked(????). Got it to my house, plugged it in, the lights come on and that is it. No fan, no compressor. Turned dials, nothing.

I could not find any tech info on this unit.

How long have you waited?
Could be you are in a defrost cycle, this will take about half an hour to complete.

If you waited longer than an hour then try turning the defrost timer (Item 342 in Section 9) cam. There is usually a hole in the cover to let you do this without taking things apart.
If it fires up I would replace the defrost timer.

If the above does nothing it does not totally eliminate the timer as the problem re: it's contacts may be toast.

I do not know if the main thermostat is 2 wire or 3 wire.
If 2 wire unplug the unit and one wire to the thermostat and measure it with a meter. Should be 0 ohms.
An alternative would be to short the wires together and then give it a try.
Be sure they cannot short to anything else.

The above is not really possible because the fresh food gets all it's cooling from the freezer so if the freezer does not work at all the fresh food will also not work but there may be a time delay between the two.

I did turn the defrost timer and the fridge came on. It's been a couple of days and it's barely cool in the fridge so there is a no cooling issue now. No time to try anything else yet.

If the compressor is running all the time, remove the cover inside the freezer so you can inspect the coils. If they only have frost in one area (usually where the freon enters) or no frost, then you have a sealed system problem and this will be an expensive repair as you need a pro.
