Model Number: ET18TKXDN00 Brand: Whirlpool Age: More than 10 years
My refrigerator/freezer stopped cooling the other day. There was air blowing in both compartments but it wasn't cold and the compressor wasn't on. I opened up the back and pulled off the starter/overload and found that the cover was burnt to a crisp and basically crumbled when I pulled it off. The wires were charred and the overload was burnt and broken too. I used a meter to check the resistance on on the compressor and I think it's ok.
I'm wondering if it's worth getting the starter/overload and replacing these or am i throwing good money after bad? If I could get another year out of this thing for $50 i would be happy. Also, where is the capacitor on this fridge? i pulled out the whole wire assembly to get a good look at the damage and I don't see the capacitor anywhere. Is it behind the compressor? I wanted to check and see if it was shot too. I can post pictures if needed. Thanks Ads By Google Related Models |

The chance that it will fix the problem in such situation is 50/50, but there is nothing to loose for you because you can return the parts if you will order it from APP. The capacitor should be somewhere close to the compressor. It's shown as #32 at the diagram.

Jeez - I read the first post and thought - " I don't remember posting that "... exactly the same problem with my Amana BC21V1W - relay is lying in 4 fried, stinky pieces on my counter.
Tested continuity at the compressor coils, got 3.2 (common/run), 4.7(common start) and 7.5 (run/start). Are these within range for this unit? (probably should have started a new thread, I know.. ) Thanks. Bernie |

Hi Bernie,
The compressor electrically looks good so, you may want to try to replace the start device. If you need the correct part number for the start device, post the MFG number of the refrigerator. Gene.

The part numbers are different for different MFG numbers.

All plugged in and working. Odd thing is, the settings on the fridge are now almost a full setting lower than they were before. Is this a possible effect of the overload relay going bad ? I don't understand how that would be possible.
