new light bulbs don't work

Model Number: 253.74154400 Brand: Kenmore Age: 1 - 5 years

Dual light bulbs for main fridge out. Replaced with 2 new 40watt bulbs but neither works. Screwed in tightly. Bulb unit snapped out while removing dead bulbs but no apparent damage or loose leads. Snapped back in. Is there a short in the system or is the switch blown? I reset the circuit breaker for the refrigerator with no result.
