the replacement defrost thermostat shown on this site definetly is the right one. the problem is the wires do not have a connector,and are only 5 inches long.my existing connection extends to the far left and the 2 wires are in a connector,overall lenght is about 18 inches,seems that to make this work,i would have to cut the existing wires and with solderless connectors splice and silicone,any suggestions.

You could use wire nuts, just make sure that they are the correct size for the wires.
Then place them so that they face down to keep water out of them.
Some folks also like to seal the open end with some calking as an extra protection.
Keep them away from the heater. I would use the black bakelite/hard plastic (not sure if it is actually bakelite) type as they have better heat resistance.
