Hi.

Is the ice cream in the freezer solid frozen or mushy?
Do you see any snow building up at the rear panel in the freezer?
If you can, measure the temperature in the freezer.

Post the results. Thank you.

Simon.

There is only a little ice cream and I think it is soft. The only thermometer I have says it's close to zero but I don't know how accurate it is. Yes, the vents at the rear of the freezer are almost totally covered with frost!

Hi.

Please provide correct model number. I also need you to remove the rear cover and tell me if the evaporator packed with snow?

Thank you.

Simon.

The model is Maytag MFI2568AEQ. I don't think I can get to the evaporator through the back. There is a cover at the rear of the freezer which I can't get off . It seems to be held by the freezer air inlet which I can't figure out how to remove. I defrosted the the evaporator with a hair dryer through the vents at the rear of the freezer and it cooled and eventually shut off. The ice maker is now working. I don't know if it's not defrosting or if the ice build up was from the freezer left open at some point. The ref. reads 38 deg with a good thermometer (control is set at 38) but the freezer reads 8 with it set at 0. At this point I need to see if the snow builds back up on the condenser and find out if there is away to calibrate the temp control. I'm going to set the freezer control below 0 and see if it will chill down to 0 on the thermometer and shut off.

Thanks for your help. Malcolm

Hi.

You should completely defrost the fridge for 24 hrs before using it. What you did with blow dryer is not enough.

Thank you.

Simon.

Default So far, so good.

Thanks again, Simon. I got the rear panel of the freezer off and -- as you implied - I had barely touched the ice on the condenser. Most of the condenser, including the attached tubing, was nearly a solid block of ice. I turned it off and warmed it with a hair drier until there were no signs of ice or water.

I turned it back on and it cooled to the set temperatures (0/38) in about 2 hours. I don't know why the ice was there in the first place but my wife thinks the freezer door was open over night a while back. I'll see what happens in the next few days.

I found a service manual and went through all of the diagnostics and found no problems. I learned a lot about the machine so I'll have a better handle on it if something happens again.

Malcolm
