so i noticed that the ice was watery this morning, thought someone left the door open or just filled the try.

kept doors closed for about 6 hours when i opened the freezer the ice was water and everything was thawing out.

emptied the stuff that was salvageable to the fridge/freezer in the garage

unplugged the fridge. rolled the fridge out and cleaned the front and rear vents, took off the metal plate and cleaned up the inside.

noticed that the condensation tray (i think) was bone dry. with the plate off i plugged the fridge back in and noticed the fan was operating fine, but it makes this clicking noise every now and then. also the black thing (condenser?) was hot to the touch. also, the temperature gauge in the freezer is staying around 45 degrees.

any suggestions? thanks in advance!

It is actually the compressor.
You can usually here it running and should be able to fee lit vibrating.
Confirm that it is running, when ever the compressor is running the freezer should be cooling.

Remove the cover from inside the freezer so you can inspect the evaporator coils.

If they are heavily ice/frosted over you have a defrost problem.
Do not defrost it but either get back to us or do a search of the forum on how to diagnose which part is shot.

If there is just frost in one area,usually where the freon enters the coils, you have a sealed system problem.
It important to do this test after the compressor has run a couple hours because if you do it shortly after a defrost cycle you may come to the wrong conclusion.
A sealed system problem is an expensive repair as you need a pro. Often it makes mosr sense to put those dollars towards a new unit.

Check that the freezer/evaporator fan is running at full speed and not slowing down or doing something weird.
The fan is required to pull air through the evaporator coils to cool it so if the fan messes up you will not get efficient cooling.
