About 6 months ago, when you push in to get water in the door, the water continues when you let go. It was sporadic, meaning it would stop in 5 seconds, sometimes 15 or 20 seconds. now it won't stop at all.
Could it be the inlet valve?

It is a good chance the inlet valve is bad. What you need to do is pull the refrigerator out so that you can unplug the refrigerator quick. When the water is running see if unplugging the refrigerator stops the water flow or if you have to turn the water off the make it stop. If you have to turn the water off the water inlet valve is bad and if unplugging the refrigerator stops the water you either need the switch for the lever or the dispenser board. the water is on, and the refrigerator is plugged in, and nothingi s coming out, either by itself, or by depressing the lever. Is the dispenser board the one with the led lights, the buttons you push for water, ice..etc?

Yes that is the board but hold the button for a minute or so you may have air in the line or just need to fill the water reservoir.

maybe i just should change the valve and switch

That would be ok but I would start with the valve because it is a lot more likely.
