GE model # TFX20JRBK WW
Hi I have been reading through the posts but mine problem seems to be a little different. I have taken the back off inside of my freezer and it is frosted. I have then defrosted it and plugged it back in(taking everything out and only leaving about 10 freezies in it) everything seemed good. 2 days later i had to manually defrost it again because the freezies had melted in the freezer and fridge seemed to be getting warmer. In the posts I have read everyone seems to say that their freezers still freeze. I am just wondering if these symtoms still call for the defrost heater or should i be looking into it further?? Oh and by the way on my fridge is the defrost timer in the fridge or freezer part ( having trouble finding exact location in diagrams).

Your defrost timer is located behind the cover in the upper back side of your fresh food section. The 3 items involved are the timer, heater, and the defrost thermostat, of course there is wiring in between those items but those rarely come into play. Below are pics with part numbers for the timer and the heater and thermostat kit. Once you find the timer you'll see a small turn knob, turn it until it clicks, your then in the defrost mode. If the heaters come on you then know the timer is bad. If the heater doesn't come on then your looking at either the heater or t-stat, which come together.

Yes the heater will definitely shows signs of putting out heat after a few minutes go by, once you put it into defrost.

The IM relies on the freezer section working correctly, temp wise, so once you get the defrost problem fixed I'm sure the IM will working also.

Thank you Frank for all ur help BUT i'm still having problems. I live in northern alberta canada and no kidding there is only one appliance repair place in a 4 hr. driving radius. I went and got a new defrost heater and i could not get the same as the one i had. i had to take a 2 element one instead of a one element (as they told me GE replaced the one element with a 2 element) so on the left side there is a yellow jumper wire and the repair man told me to hook the pink wire to a terminal on the right side and the blue wire to the other terminal on the right side. is this the correct way to install this new defrost heater??? because it still doesn't seem to be working but we had at least 5 power surges the day i changed it will that wreck this heater?? Also i read other posts and they said cover should be put back in freezer compartment so coldnes circulates properly is this so with my GE too?? because with cover off the top of freezer does not get cold enough for my ice machine to work (GE specialist said had to be 15 degrees F.) but bottom of freezer is freezing like a charm. sry by the way defrost timer seems to be working fine as per ur previous directions but new heater is not kicking in . Thank you for ur help in advance.:(
