Freezer has been working well for 5 years. Now the items on the top part of freezer are melting and the items on the bottom are frozen solid. Parts diagram shows a fan, is that for keeping uniform temperature or help in defrosting?
Thanks.

Yes a fan in the freezer will circulate the air and help keep uniform temperatures.
At minimum it should be on whenever the compressor is on.

on-line, the parts breakdown shows an evaporator motor/fan. I'm not sure how to access it to see if it's working. Top shelf the temp is 40 and close to zero in the bottom. Gasket seems ok. When I close the door I hear the air being sucked out. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

I could not find any info on the given model number, are you sure it is not a MQU1656BEW. That unit has a fan.

There is usually a screw or two holing the cover to the back of the freezer compartment. If there is a gasket sometimes they are under it.

Although the following is for a different unit it may halp.

Yes that is the correct model #, sorry I dropped a #. I'm sure you are correct about the screws holding the cover, though I don't see them on the Appliancepartspros diagram.
