How to access Damper assembly Part Number ap3140379

psh23pgra

I have a psh23pgraww GE arctica refrigerator that has begunmaking a “wood-pecker” type “rat-ta-tat-tat” sound randomly. The sound is coming from the fresh food sideof refrigerator down near the bottom middle. From internet queries I believe I’ve determined that the problem is afailed ap3140379 Damper Assembly. Withthis I have TWO questions:

1) Have I correctly diagnosed the problem?

2) HOW the heck to I get access to the Damper Assemblyitself?

( without BREAKing something else in the process.)

I’ve successfullyremoved three attach screws common to the upper and lower covers (Part numbersAP3186947 and AP3796726) and have loosened the condenser LOW SIDE coils and DRAINtray (Part number AP3854299 amd AP3796479). BUT STILL CAN NOT SUCCESSFULLY GET THE upper AP3186947 COVER OFF to accessthe problem part.

WHAT AM I NOT DOING RIGHT YET? THANKS. Doug

Doug,
You're on track, it could be an issue with the damper assembly in the "custom Cool" system. Heres some basic help:
The following components must be removed in the appropriate order to access the CustomCool assembly.
Remove the 2 bottom freezer baskets. Remove the recessed Phillips-head screw that attaches the CustomCool inlet. Pull the inlet out of the freezer wall. Access the fresh food evaporator. (See Fresh

Food Evaporator
, follow steps 1 through 6.) Carefully lift and pull the fresh food evaporator forward. Slide the drain trough to the right and remove it from under the evaporator. Note: When installing the drain trough, insure trough outlet is inserted into the drain funnel.
Remove the support from under the evaporator tubing. Remove the 3 Phillips-head screws that hold the CustomCool

unit to the bottom of the refrigerator compartment. Move the unit to the right, then carefully pull the left side towards the front of the refrigerator. Place the unit vertically on its right side.
Peel back the foam seal from the left side and the tape from the rear of the unit. Release the 3 tabs and remove the cover. Fresh Food Evaporator:
The following components must be removed in the appropriate order to access the fresh food evaporator: Remove the CustomCool™ drawer, and
necessary drawers and covers above the CustomCool drawer, to expose the evaporator cover.

Note: The water line coil cover is slotted. To remove it, slide the water line coil cover toward the door opening. Remove the water line coil cover and lay
the water line assembly down on top of the CustomCool housing for better access to the fresh food evaporator fan cover. Pull out and remove the top insulation cover and the bottom tubing cover and styrofoam block inside. Remove the 3 Philips-head screws that hold the fresh food evaporator fan cover in place. Carefully pull the cover forward, then disconnect the fresh food evaporator fan and beverage center blower.

Thanks and Good Luck,

Smile WORKED!!!! Your instructions were perfect THANKS a million!

thanks to your instructions, with help of wife holding a flashlight, I was able to get this Custom Cool assembly opened withOUT breaking anything. Turned out to be the RAPID COOL dual damper assembly that had its shaft/spindle thread Gear cracked and as such was causing the random chattering noise that sounded light a "wood pecker".

It turned out that the broken part in need of replacement was a AP3184950 (WR60X10062) Damper asm supply (Dual Flap), NOT the AP3140379 (WR60X10063) Damperassembly d (Single Flap).

thanks Again!!!
doug.
