Normally a modern fridg will be on 20% of the time, not 50 %, assuming a room temperature near 70 degrees. I would suspect a refrigerant leak/ bad compressor. With a modern refrigerator with R143A refrigerant, you are only wasting between $10 and $20 per month, but if a refrigerant leak, expect conditions to deteriorate.
