Default Amana Refrigerator not working
Model Number: XRBR 904 BB   Brand: Amana   Age: 1 - 5 years

Appliance Parts from AppliancePartPros.com
Hello Guys,

I have a fridge / freezer. The freezer is working fine but not the refridgerator part. I have no authorised repair agent where I live in France and wondered if anyone could help me in identifying the correct part to replace.

As far as I am aware this model only has one thermostat which seems to function correctly because the freezer compartment comes on and off normally.

I wondered if the defrost timer was at fault ?

Thanks for any advice you may be able to provide.

Martin

By the way I forgot to say that for years when the compressor stopped there was a big thud like an ice cube falling (the fridge does not have an ice cube machine). This noise is no longer present when the compressor stops. Recently, this noise was much louder.

Martin,

What are the exact temperatures in the freezer and in the refrigerator?

Does the fan in the freezer work? If it does can you feel a cold air coming into the refrigerator?

Gene.

Hi Gene,

I will get hold of a thermometer for the first question and get back to you. For the second question, air is coming into the freezer compartment but no air is getting into the refrigerator compartment (unless I leave the freezer door open in which case some cold air comes throught the (open) duct azt the back of the refrigerator compartment).

If I understand the principles of operation of this Amana fridge / freezer, the damper located at the back of the refrigerator compartment opens or closes to ajust temperature (via the front damper and damper belt). How is cold air sent to the refrigerator compartment : is there a specific fan for this ? If so maybe that is the faulty part ?

Any idea why when the compressor stopped prior to the refrigerator failure there was always a big thud like someone knocking on the door ? (this no longer happens since the failure, but got louder prior to breakdown).

Sincere thanks Gene for your interest in this case, I really appreciate.
Have a nice day

Martin

The fan in the freezer distributing cold air through the freezer and into the fresh food compartment through the damper.

Also there is an air return to provide the proper air circulation. One of possibilities is: this return is blocked somehow. Unfortunately I could not find it on the diagrams. Look for it in the refrigerator.

Gene.

Gene and Martin, I am having the same problem with my refrig. and it's driving me crazy. The refrig. return air is bottom left but it is not blocked ??? I also think it's a damper control problem but not sure how to fix it. I'm still puzzled by the fact that air does not flow in the refrig. compartment until the freezer dor is opened ???? would this happen if the damper was closed ????

Txs,
-Rich E.

Hello Rich,

You should be able to see if the damper is closed (in which case it will be vertical. If it is horizontal the problem lies elsewhere. On my model the return is under the veg bins. Guess we both have to do a bit more dismounting !

If I discover anything I will let you know.

Martin

Rich,

Different models work differently. What is the complete model number of your refrigerator?

Gene.

Default Same problem here tool

I am having the same porblem. One week ago I took the freezer apart to find a lot of frost behind the back cosmetic panel. It was so heavy I could see it through the small vent slits. After being unpluged for a half hour while troubleshooting the frost melted off the fins , I then plugged it back in and the fan in the center top off the freezer started right up blowing the freezer air into the top of the refridge like it was suppose to. I put it back together and it worked for another week. Today is was not cooling the refridge again but the freezer is still working good. Is there a way to test the defrost feature? Since my fan works after the heavy frost clears I dont think the fan in the problem. What do you think? Thanks Tim

Hi again Gene,

Bought a thermometer today and it gives the following readings :
- freezer : - 16° celsius
- refrigerator : + 17° celsius
- room temperature : + 24° celsius

Is the information of any use to you ?

Regards,

Martin
