My refrigerator is about 7 years old. About 4 months ago our refrigerator stopped cooling or freezing. A repairman replaced persing valve and recharged the freezer. Two days later it stopped working again and the repairman said it was one of two things; either the motherboard was bad or if we unplugged the refrigerator for about an hour and then restarted the refrigerator it would reset and go back to normal.

The reset seemed to work but now it is doing it again (and I wonder if we need to replace the motherboard. I spoke to someone at work and he told me I should check online before I call the repairman again. He said that his motherboard was part of a recall. Any suggestions?

Does it make any sound or it's completely dead?

When you place your head inside the freezer and the refrigerator you can hear fan noise. The temperature still feels cold in the freezer, but the ice cream is still slushy. It is still cool inside the refrigerator.

I tried unplugging the refrigerator for an hour as the repairman suggested 4 months ago and then plugged it back in. It still seems cold in the freezer but the ice cream is still not solid. This was done 8 hours ago.

Do you know what kind of a piercing valve he installed? If it was a saddle (tap-a-line) piercing valve, then he could use it only for temporary access to a sealed system for checking operating pressures. If that valve is still there, it is illegal and it could cause a leak.

Remove the rear panel in the freezer and check how the evaporator coils are covered with frost.

Post the results.

I don't know what kind of piercing valve he used. I am just reading from the invoice that he left me.

When I open the freezer door and pull the bottom drawer out I can see the coils and they don't look frosty.

I removed the cover on the freezer coils and took a photo. I am sending this photo as an attachement.

From the evaporator picture, if that's the most frost you can get after a long time in running, you either have a leaky piercing valve, bad condenser motor, bad compressor, or an evaporator refrigerant leak. This assumes the compressor is running all the time.

So is it time to call a repairman?

If the refrigerator worked fine for several hours, then failed and the compressor was running for the entire period (it should be vibrating and warm), then you have a serious system problem for a pro to look at.The service person probably knew this, just never told you. Considering it's age, probably not worth fixing, just too expensive.
