Gene, I have a Kenmore bottom freezer refrigerator, model 596.72214200 that has a cold freezer/warm refridgerator and there is frost on the back panel of the freezer. I'm going to tear into it to see if I can diagnose the problem but would really like a break down diagram for reference and can't seem to find one when I do the model number search. Is there one somewhere you can direct me to? Thanks for all the great advice on this forum.

drydocked,
The defrost timer is located above the light module in the fresh food compartment. The defrost heater is #15 on the break down diagram and the defrost thermostat is not illustrated. - The part number for the defrost timer is AP3492964 - The part number for the defrost heater is AP3502547 - The part number for the defrost thermostat is AP3475238 Gene.

Our refrigerator, Amana ASD262RHRW, was working fine until something blocked the freezer door open and it froze up completely. The evaporator was frozen solid and even the damper had ice in it. I defrosted it a little and some ice fell in from the freezer side into the damper area. Since it was defroster it worked for about one week then was frozen solid again. This time I defrosted it completely and a week later it was frozen again. I checked the resistance of the defrost heater and it was about 30 ohms so I replaced the defrost time. The compressor and the evaporator fan cycle off and on but the defrost heater does not kick in. Is there any chance that the defrost thermostat is not working (is stuck open)? I thought it the defrost thermostat was open it would never cool down and it does that great until it freezes up and I have to defrost it. Could the ice that fell in the damper between the compartments have damaged the main circuit board, I have no idea where it is located? Thanks in advance.

I have this exact problem (Frozen freezer and warm fridge) and am having a hard time here locating the defrost timer. I have a GE GSS201EMBWW. Any suggestions? |

I found the defrost timer in my GE refrigerator to be located in the upper part reg food compartment next to the thermostat ( temp control ) . There was a was a little white plastic plug that could be removed in order to turn it manually . If you want to go ahead and remove that panel cover anyway (power off ) , you will probably find a wiring diagram inside .

This refrigerator has the classic symptoms of defrost circuit problems in the top sticky thread here .Back to the problem with my GETBX25PAYGRWW . I have checked the defrost thermostat (warm and cold ) and defrost heater and both are OK. However I was not getting power to the terminals of the defrost heater and was puzzled until I found the wiring diagram inside the panel that housed the defrost control ( defrost timer ). After looking at the wiring diagram ,I noticed that the wiring pigtals to the defrost heater for this model are fused so now I guess have to cut them and and check for continuity . If fuses (or fusible links )are blown, I guess it is pretty safe to presume that the problem is limited to defrost heater ?

rkpatt,
I do not have the wiring diagram for your refrigerator. If you can post it, it might help to better understand your problem. I never seen a fused defrost circuit. Gene.

r.rydberg@gmail.com,
There is no defrost timer in your refrigerator. It operates by the main control board on the back of the fridge. You can find the complete troubleshooting instructions in the reply to bohemian question here: Freezer is fine, refrigerator is too warm. Here are the break down diagrams for the GE refrigerator Model GSS20IEMBWW Gene.
