My fridge is not cooling adequately all of a sudden, so we hired a technician to come out and take a look at it. They decided that the defroster and fan were bad.. They charges us $329.00 in total to do the work. They told us to wait 4 hours to see if the fridge was cooling correctly again. It was not. The owner of the company told us that we actually had to wait 24 hours. He said something about the freezer needing to defrost first before cooling. However, the actual tech said that the freezer had already defrosted and the coils had no ice on them. What to do next? Our fridge, and now freezer, are still not cooling correctly. Please help?!

Thank you,
Stan

A model number may helps help you.

I would go with the techs advice If the coils were defrosted and the compressor came on it should start cooling.

Were you there when the tech fixed it?
Were the coils heavily iced/frosted over?
Was the fan running OK before the service call? It should be on whenever the compressor is on, at least on most units it works this way.
Which fan are you referring to (the condenser/compressor fan or the evaporator/freezer fan)?

Is the compressor running?
You can usually hear it but you should also be able to feel it vibrating and it should be warm.

If the compressor is running and there is no frost/cooling on the evaporator coils then you have a sealed system problem.

The repair guys are not returning my calls. I was not here for the initial repair, and they have been back once already to look at it again. They seemed to be baffled, and acted like they didn't know what else to do. The repair guy told me that the coils did originally have ice on them and that is why they said the defroster was broken. They also said the fan that blows air into the fridge from the freezer needed to be replaced. They did both of these replacements and the compressor does turn on and off, but I currently have the settings for both the freezer and the fridge set to the coldest setting, and they both are not as cold as before all of this at a much lower setting. What is our next move?

Thanks,
Stan

Check the temperature in the freeze.
It should be 0 to 5 degrees F.

As far as the compressor etc., it sounds like the unit is running OK.
The compressor is cycling on/off and it is cooling but will not get cold enough.
This would be a thermostat problem (depending on the model).
May even be that they moved the end of the thermostat capillary (sensing) so it is not sensing the correct temperature.
