Refrigerator & Freezer Repair

In recent days my fridge has been running constantly. I believe that the defrost timer needs to be replaced, and am waiting for the part to arrive.
Once the part is here, and it is replaced , I would like to test the temperature controls. I am not sure if the control is stuck in closed position. Please advise how to test?

As you turn it to the warmer setting it should cut everything off and come back on when you turn it colder.

Actually, my question is how would I test the temperature control unit outside of the refridgerator. In other words, I would like to test for continuity, by using an ohmmeter. Do I have to cool the unit down first to check if the control interupts the circuit? Thank you for your reply.
