Just recently my (in-freezer) ice maker stopped working on my 9 year old Maytag. One of the most distinct symptoms (besides the obvious lack of ice) is that the "cycle time sound" is different. It would normally make a *constant* soft buzzing sound for several seconds (maybe 10) while you heard it pushing water to the tray in the freezer. That sound is much shorter now, and sounds like like it is petering out. Something like air being let out of a balloon (when the balloon is almost empty). It only makes the sound for about 2 seconds. I have verified that the copper line is bringing water to the unit, and have already replaced the inline water filter.

From all I can see, the most likely culprit is the water valve, but I would like to actually test it to see if that is it before I order a replacement.

Could anyone help me out with this one? This is a simple unit (no in-door ice or water dispenser) - just like the old days :)

Test the water inlet valve for continuity using a multitester. Disconnect the two wires noting which goes where. Set the multitester to the ohms setting X100 (if available, otherwise use the nearest ohm setting). Place a probe on each terminal. The multitester should display a reading of 200 to 500 ohms. Close inspection of the inlet valve and especially the coil may reveal the exact ohm resistance rating to test for.

Thanks for the quick response! I found after some more sluething around that the issue was a blockage of ice way up in the dispensing tube - out of sight from within the freezer itself - I only discovered it by sticking my little finger up into it.

I will keep your notes and though in case I ever need it!

Thanks again!

I believe your will have more trouble. The water inlet valve on the back of the unit where the water supply comes in can have a slow leak and will cause ice to buildup and block the fill tube. Disconnect the ice maker line from the valve and watch to see if it has a slow drip. It doesn’t take much to eventually block the fill tube.
The valve can leak because of sediment in the water preventing it from closing or low water pressure.
