My Jenn-Air refrigerator overhead relay started making a clicking sound a couple of months ago. A few days ago the refrigerator stopped cooling properly. Then after turning off the refrigreator for 24 hours we restarted and it appears to be cooling now. I suspect this relay controls the defrosting and needs to be replaced. Am I correct?

Here are your parts
Replacement parts for JCD2389DE models | AppliancePartsPros.com

Sorry but I am not sure what relay you are referring to.
Could you give the part number or Item/Section number of it.

The defrost is controlled by a defrost board Item 13 in Section 2.

Check that te condenser/compressor fan is running.
Check that the condenser coils and the front and rear vents are clean.

I beleive the part I am concerned with is the ADC board. I beleive it is in the upper right corner of frig. I heard some unsual intermittant clicking sounds from that section a few weeks ago. Compressor and fans seem to be running fine. Condensor coils are clean. Now freezer seems to be doing good after a manual defrost. Too soon to tell about frig section but I think it is okay at the moment but hard to tell yet. It seems like the ADC borad was replaced a few years ago but I don't remember

OK does sound like a defrost problem.

Here is a manual which should help narrow it down.
Odds are that it is the ADC board since it was clicking.
16010154 Maytag Refrigerator Service Manual - ApplianceDigest.com
You have to join the site to download the manual but it is free and this is a very good site for manuals and other info for the appliance repair DIYer.

You could confirm this by trying the following.

First remove the evaporator cover in the freezer so you can see the coils.
Do not let them de-ice.
If they are heavily iced/frosted over you have a defrost problem.

If yes.
Manually force a defrost cycle, see the manual when the fans and compressor turn off you are in defrost.
Now check the defrost heater to see if it is on.
Be careful you do not want to burn your fingers.
If the heater is on then the ADC board needs replacing, re: it is probably never getting into a defrost cycle.

If not on.
Unplug the unit.
Remove the wire plug the heating element and defrost thermostat assembly (Item 12 in Section 4) from the wiring and measure across the combo for continuity, usually around 20 ohms or so.

Note that the defrost thermostat opens just above freezing so must be frozen to check it. Also inspect it, if it is bulged at all replace it even if it measures OK.

If both the above are OK then odds are the ADC is toast.
